Architects: plb architecture, Winchester
Consulting Engineers: DJ Hartigan, Jersey This was a new £12 million School, at the time the largest Contract being undertaken in Jersey . Plb Architecture of Windcatcher won the award to build the school and battle McCarthy undertook the original design concepts for a low energy approach maximising green energy techniques. The 24 Class Rooms in the Cluster Blocks were selected to receive the Monodraught Natural Ventilation systems. These were also designed to provide ventilation to the corridors. Windcatcher Application 24 No. GRP 1000 systems were installed complete with internal segments to deflect and direct the prevailing wind into either the Class Rooms or the corridors and at the same time to act as 'Passive Vents' to ventilate the areas below. Design Sense Award The Monodraught Windcatchers installed at Haunte Vallee were selected as finalists for the prestigious British Steel Sponsored Design Sense Award, which had a £40,000 top prize. 61 entries were received from 16 countries and the Monodraught Windcatchers were the only British entry selected by the judges. Testing The Consultants, D.j. Hartigan, have installed a number of sophisticated monitors and readings are constantly being taken and logged as an on-going programme of monitoring. Full results are still being compiled. In the meantime the Architects, plb architecture commented, "that throughout the long summer of 1999 there were no comments of overheating in any of the classrooms or corridors despite the fact that the classrooms were used to capacity and the corridors were fully glazed and faced due south".
Future Developments Battle McCarthy and Monodraught are to join forces to develop a second generation of Windcatcher systems based on the highly successful result of this project. |
